Call it "locavore light"

OK. All that planning... May 1st, snow notwithstanding, seems like a nice day to start a locavore diet. No more pretend locavore... we now have access to everything I need.

My exceptions may be relatively extensive, as I want to make this last all year. I will not refuse to go out to restaurants or to friends; homes, or to school potlucks; I will not refuse to eat it if my husband happens to bring it home. I will not let myself faint if I am out with the kids and can't get home in time to stave off hypoglycemia... and I will not throw out what is in our pantry already.

What I will do is plan home menus around local ingredients, and can and freeze available produce so I can do the same all year, and summarize my current purchases on the blog for those interested. Today, from Whole Foods, chocolate and coffee... and flowers for my kids' Spring Fair celebration, as the paltry offerings from my garden (mostly daffodils, here in North Boulder) are soggy with snow and would make for poor flower crowns. Next year maybe, we'll use dandelions, tree blossoms, grape hyacinths, and maybe even a couple of asparagus spears...

Today so far, I had duck eggs from Eastern Plains Natural Food Co-op, with chives from my front yard, coffee I made with local milk, and salad from Jay Hill Farm with crackers by Rustica and Windsor Dairy cheese. Dinner is whatever vegies were left over in the fridge with rice and peanut sauce - leftovers, exceptions...locavore light!

Join the challenge on Crunchy Chicken's blog!! or feel free to design your own version of locavore light.
